Want Better Donor Engagement? Create Unforgettable Stories

Updated: Jul 19

One of the most effective ways to engage donors is through storytelling. However, donors are not simply interested in the stories that organizations tell about themselves; they are far more engaged when they can create and share their own stories. To create these connections points, many nonprofits turn to galas, golf outings, or other traditional fundraising events.

We often suggest that organizations with limited time and resources consider reallocating energy and talent away from these generic events to create something that truly highlights the mission.

For example, we helped replace a standard fundraising gala with a student pitch competition, where winning teams received large checks after pitching their ideas to a panel of VIP judges. This new approach transformed a typical gala, where adults spoke for 90% of the time, into a unique experience that put students in the driver’s seat, showcasing the organizations impact and growth firsthand. Donors would often share stories from this event with us several months or even years later.

The Pitfalls of Ineffective Donor Engagement

In the world of philanthropy, donor engagement is a critical component of a nonprofit’s success. Unfortunately, many organizations tend to limit their interactions with donors, missing out on opportunities to build lasting relationships and secure long-term support. At Inspire Philanthropy, we believe that donor engagement should go beyond mere transactions and instead focus on creating meaningful connections that inspire continued giving and advocacy.

All too often, nonprofits create activities for donors that have little or no effect on the bottom line, mistakenly believing that any engagement is better than none. For instance, one funder asked if they could bring out 75 employees to paint classrooms. I kindly explained that while we appreciated their enthusiasm, such an activity would not showcase our organization’s work or help their employees learn about our mission — fail. Moreover, their colleagues, being consultants, likely did not have the strongest painting skills, which meant we might have to pay a professional to redo the work afterward — double fail!

Instead, we focused on engaging a smaller group of four volunteers who could have a deeper experience with the program. These volunteers got to see the work up close, interact with the students, and understand the mission on a deeper level. This approach proved to be far more effective. The following year, the same funder increased their giving to over six figures, highlighting the importance of depth over reach in donor engagement.

Fostering Deeper Connections

Reach and depth are two different things. While it might seem beneficial to engage as many donors as possible, providing meaningful, impactful experiences to a smaller number of donors often yields better results. Donors who feel a genuine connection to the mission are more likely to remain long-term supporters, advocate for the cause, and increase their contributions over time.

Attracting donors through meaningful volunteer opportunities, behind-the-scenes tours, or events where donors can meet beneficiaries and see the impact of their support firsthand allows them to develop a personal connection to the work. This involvement enables donors to share their unique experiences and contributions, making the organization’s mission a part of their own story. By facilitating these opportunities, nonprofits can foster deeper relationships and a greater sense of ownership and investment among their supporters.
